Lists

Lists are a useful way to present information in a more structured way.

Users will find it easier to scan and understand than trying to read a long sentence separated by commas. They also work well on mobile.

The two options are:

  • bulleted lists
  • numbered lists

Apply bullet styles in the 'styles' dropdown in the WYSIWYG editor.

Bulleted lists

This guidance follows the GOV.UK style guidance for bullet points.

The style to writing bullets is to:

  • always have a lead in introduction, followed by a colon
  • avoid starting each bullet with the same word
  • write each bullet with a lowercase word at the start, unless it is a proper noun
  • never add fullstops, semi colons or commas at the end of the bullet, including the last bullet

When to use a bulleted list

Use bullet points to write lists of related content or to break down complicated sentences.

Numbered lists

Use a numbered list when you are listing content that follows a linear process or guides a user through a process.

If a process is complicated or long, it may be better presented as a step by step.

Use bulleted lists to write lists of related content or to break down complicated sentences.

Writing out a numbered list

You do not need to use a lead-in sentence. All steps should form a complete sentence with a full stop at the end.
